It’s our very first third-party published game, developed by our friends at PortaPlay, and you can wishlist it right now on Steam! 

Gerda: A Flame in Winter is a poignant narrative game with RPG-lite elements, set during World War II. You’ll play Gerda Larsen, a village nurse who lives in the Danish village of Tinglev, which is under German occupation.  

It’s not a tale told on the front lines, but in the intimate setting of this small village where Gerda has lived her whole life. One day, Gerda returns home from the clinic and notices blood as she enters the house. To her horror, she discovers that her husband, Anders, is being arrested by the Gestapo. He left behind important resistance documents, and it looks like many Danish and German lives will depend on what she does next. 

Armed only with her wits, compassion, and insight, the advantage she has as a civilian is the knowledge of her people and village. Gerda’s personality traits are her skills, and her connection with others will also determine how the story unfolds. You make choices in the game through exploration and dialog, as well as through your relationships with other characters.  

She will meet a cast of characters throughout the game: her fellow villagers—both Danes and ethnic Germans—as well as members of the Resistance, and the occupying Nazis. Every interaction holds weight, and every decision is critical in times of turmoil and war. 

“This game is important to us because it is inspired by true stories of World War II, including those of my grandmother. With Gerda, we just hope to share an accurate vision of some of the struggles of occupied populations during that time and allow players to realize that some people were faced with difficult choices that defied absolute judgement. Through this narrative game we hope to encourage the sharing of testimonies. We know there are many human stories that go untold in wars and occupations around the globe, many still in the middle of theirs right now. And we are glad to be able to tell at least one such story, with Gerda: A Flame in Winter.”, shares Hans von Knut Skovfoged, Head of Development at PortaPlay.

In this bundle, play as two very different women: Gerda and Liva.
Gerda has lived a quiet life as a nurse and is pushed into involvement with the Resistance by the Gestapo’s arrest of her husband, Anders. She is compassionate and tries to avoid conflict where possible.

A quick-thinking and observant nurse who works in the small village of Tinglev. Growing up with a Danish mother and a German father has made her a frequent mediator in the local community, though some think she is too unwilling to take sides. She puts her people pleasing ways and perfectionism to good use working at the local clinic as a nurse. ​

A good-natured mechanic who would rather spend his days illustrating the local wildlife than tinkering with an engine. Despite a quiet disposition, there is a righteous heart beating beneath his calm exterior.

A Wehrmacht officer with a penchant for cigarettes and crime, Reinhardt was transferred to Southern Jutland, where he quickly integrated himself into the local black market. He cares little for ideology and partakes of illicit substances to quell both his nerves and his guilt.​

​The daughter of local manufacturing magnate Algot Vestergaard, Margit enjoys assisting with the family business, but has reservations about her father’s illicit business dealings. Often escaping into books, she worries she might never see the world outside of Tinglev.​

Max Caulfield, a newly transferred photography student, discovers that she can rewind time while saving her estranged best friend, Chloe Price. The pair reunite and begin to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Amber, Chloe’s friend and a student of Blackwell Academy.

Out of time

Now reunited with her friend Chloe, Max starts to experiment with her power and begins to wonder if it is related to her visions or the weird snow from the day before. But life goes on in Blackwell Academy and a certain viral video has become a major topic of discussion. Meanwhile, what did happen to Rachel Amber?

Episode 3

Chaos theory

Max and Chloe’s investigation into Rachel Amber’s disappearance lead them to break into Blackwell Academy after dark, searching for answers. It’s here they discover that Rachel kept many secrets and was not the person Chloe thought she knew. Max meanwhile discovers she has a new power that brings with it some devastating consequences.

Episode 4

Dark Room

Max realises that changing the past can lead to painful consequences and that time is not a great healer. Her investigation into the disappearance of Rachel Amber begins to reach a thrilling conclusion as she finds the Dark Room. Will the answers lie within? Or will there just be trouble?

Episode 5

Polarized

Max learns that time is impossible to control as she moves inexorably towards the most agonising decision of her life. Arcadia Bay, meanwhile, is preparing to weather a huge storm as Life is Strange comes to a gripping and gut wrenching conclusion.
